Today marks the highlight of my life

Today marks the highlight of my lifeToday marks the highlight of my lifeIn the middle of watching wingsuit videos the other day, the athlete shared a startling bolt of wisdom from the blueToday marks the highlight of my life, he says as he readies his climb over a railing 10,000 feet up.Moments like this are why I live, why I feel like Im on this planet. When a Man is tired of Wingsuit Videos, he is tired of Life joked James Fallows, paraphrasing Samuel Johnsons famous quip about London.True wingsuit videos and full-screen mode thrill in a way that transports you to a magical feeling. The athlete in this video, Marshall Miller, focused on his goal for a decade, which leads me to askWhats your goal? What day off in the future are you preparing for? When will you be able to say today marks the best day of mylife? If you could describe it, what would that day be? What would you be doing? How would you feel about achieving it?And then ask yourself what does it take to get there? What are all the steps Id have to follow to proceed from where I am today to this best day? What kinds of obstacles would I have to overcome? What challenges would I face? And then why dont I do that? Why dont I get started today?Because, having given career advice for almost two decades, the most effective advice I ever give is why dont you go do that? when someone tells me their dreams. And then no, thats notlage really a problem, you can figure it out and overcome it, when I ask what would prevent them from achieving that dream. (If you dont believe that, then read my story last year on the one-armed man who became a world champion kickboxer.)You have it within you to have the highlight of your life in the decade ahead. Will you start, today, on achieving it, on jumping from the mountaintop, on flying through space and time to your future best day ever?I know youll be able to say, sooner than you thinkMoments like this are why I live, why I feel like Im on this planet.Im rooting for you

David N. Wormley

David N. Wormley David N. Wormley Honorary Membership Recipient David WormleyDavid N. Wormley knew early on that he wanted to be an engineer, and as he sees it, this is a wonderful time in many ways to be an engineer. He is the son of an engineer and remembers taking tours of the factory where his father was a manager. He recalls that he was asked in junior high school to write an essay on what he wanted to be. At that point, I said I wanted to be a mechanical engineer, he said. As fate would have it, I have certainly followed that plan.Today, David Wormley, Ph.D., is the Harold and Inge Marcus dean of engineering at The Pennsylvania State University. According to Dr. Wormley, This is an especially propitious time for engineering and mechanical engineering. In behauptung recent times I think its very clear that there is much more national appreciation and interest in the contributions that engineering can make both to the national economy and to many of the major pressing issues that we face in the country. He added, When we look at the impact, or the potential for impact of engineering in the nation, I think that its never been greater.Mr. Wormleys research is in the area of dynamic systems and control with applications to transportation systems.Dr. Wormley is recognized with Honorary Membership in ASME for exceptional leadership in the engineering profession and educational field, including service on numerous governmental and university committees. Before Dr. Wormley joined Penn State, in 1992, he was a faculty member at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he served as head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and then as associate dean of engineering. His research is in the area of dynamic systems and control with applications to transportation systems, fossil fuel power plants, and fluid power systems. He has worked closely with industry and currently serves on the boards of the Michael Baker Corp. and the Sun Hydraulics Corp.Dr. Wormley h as served as chair of the National Science Foundations Engineering Directorate Advisory Committee and chair of the Executive Committee of the National Research Councils Transportation Research Board. He also served on the National Academy of Engineerings Committee on Assessing the Capacity of U.S. Engineering Research, and the National Research Councils Committee for a Study of the Motor Vehicle Rollover Rating System. He has served on numerous university and professional advisory committees, associated with institutions including Carnegie Mellon, Iowa State University, the University of Michigan, the University of Texas, Boston University, and the National Academy of Engineering Advisory Committee to the Center for the Advancement of Scholarship on Engineering Education. His research is described in more than 100 papers and reports, and he is co-author of the textbook System Dynamics An Introduction (Prentice Hall, 1996).An ASME Fellow, Dr. Wormley served as vice president of the Sys tems and Design Group (1991-92). Earlier activities include chair of the Technical Panel on Transportation (1970-77), member of the Fluidic Committee (1968-76), chair of the Applied Mechanics Committee on Transportation (1979-88), member (1981-89) and chair (1988-89) of the Dynamic Systems and Control Division Executive Committee, and associate editor of the Journal of Dynamic Systems, Measurement and Control (1977-81). He received a Lewis Moody Award (1970) and Dynamic Systems and Control Education Award (1998).Dr. Wormley is a Fellow of the American Society for Engineering Education, where he served as president (2006-07). He also served on the editorial advisory board for the Journal of Engineering Education (1991-2002), and was chair of the Engineering Deans Council (2001-04) and the Councils Public Policy Committee (2000-01).He received his bachelors degree, masters degree, and Ph.D. in mechanical engineering at MIT in 1962, 1964, and 1968, respectively. There is much more natio nal appreciation and interest in the contributions that engineering can make.David N. How to Collaborate with Engineers All Over the World

How to Collaborate with Engineers All Over the World How to Collaborate with Engineers All Over the World How to Collaborate with Engineers All Over the Worldby Carol MilanoAt Carnegie Mellon, the fastest-growing student organization is its Engineers Without Borders (EWB-USA) chapter, according to Professor Kelvin Gregory, the faculty mentor. Founded in 2008 by Brad Hall, a senior mechanical engineering student, EWB offers young engineers an opportunity to interact with colleagues all over the world, and participate in projects that benefit developing communities in many nations.EWB-USA has hundreds of university and professional chapters. Each chapter partners with non-government organizations in a variety of locations that request assistance. Often, projects focus on a particular universitys expertise for example, Midwestern colleges might address agricultural needs. Marisa Simmons (BS, 2013) joined MITs EWB chapter in her freshman year. Its first project, solar panels for a Uganda n health center, required both electrical and mechanical engineering. During the summer of 2009, MIT students did on-site interviews and surveys in Uganda. In 2010, Simmons was one of four MIT students (plus a faculty mentor) who teamed up with several Makerere University students for six weeks in Uganda. After installing solar panels, the students initiated water purification efforts, using information the research team gathered. In her teams second Uganda trip in 2013, Simmons notes that they continued rainwater harvesting, which is the most affordable way to get water in that region. We had built six harvesting tanks and will update those and build more. The structures are small and simple, made of mortar cement reinforced with wire mesh. Theres local access to those materials, but plastic would have to be trucked in. EWB projects are usually simple enough that students can do them. The point is that you do a design thats feasible for the community and basic enough for people wit h little experience and minimal equipment. Its much more than the equations and scientific principles you learn in school We learned logistics and project organization. Its not just design of the project and model, its making koranvers you can get all the materials, said Simmons. She discovered that every culture has unique ways of doing things, including the construction process. It was good for us to find out from local students what kind of construction theyd do there, rather than just say, This is how we do it in America. In any project in a developing nation, things change all the time. We learned how to be flexible, and got actual practice in on-site problem-solving. Although the experience was tough and challenging at times, Simmons acknowledged that, the project was a very, rewarding experience. Global Opportunities The project areas for both Engineers Without Borders (EWB-USA) and Engineering for Change (E4C) areAgricultureCivic WorksEnergyInformation SystemsSanitationStruc turesWater SupplyProf. Gregory worked on an international project as an undergraduate at the University of Nebraska in 1995. Our technology is far more advanced than what is available in communities with EWB projects, he observed, Its important for students to provide technology that is appropriate from both engineering and cultural standpoints. You cant install 20-story windmills to supply power in a developing country because they couldnt fix it Students assess, design, implement, and train. They make aya the communitys needs are being met before leaving, and that what they have done is sustainable. For each projects multiple trips, Carnegie Mellon students are accompanied by licensed professional engineers, who work with them on design and implementation. In 2011, EWB-USA, ASME and IEEE founded Engineering for Change (E4C). One of its 12 lead sponsors, the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) has had membership participation grow more than 75% since 2011. As reported by Alyse Stofer, President of SWE. Engineering for Change is a fantastic collaborative forum, combining humanitarian and engineering issues. Its a true multi-generational, multi-discipline, on-line community of engineers, social scientists, and innovative thinkers around the world. Youll see different areas of interest. Go where you have knowledge and passion, exclaimed Stofer. SWEs website also features a member participating in an E4C project.E4Cs Workspace section encourages members to share problems and brainstorm new ideas with an alliance of 500,000 member engineers and technologists in E4C. Membership is free. Any registered member can post challenges or questions. One recent request was for creating a mechanism allowing better airflow on Venezuelan public buses. (Postings are monitored by the E4C community at large.)You get to interact with all types of engineers and other professionals you wouldnt ordinarily work with, says Stofer, and think about how we can bring our insights and skills to humanitarian needs. Engineers want to give back. Thats what makes this a great collaboration.

Whether you made Deans List once or many times, its still something you are able to include on your resume. Theres not any reason to feel intimidated. State the position you need or the kind of work that you want to do now. Deans list can act as a bit of information which adds more credentials to your resume and tells the prospective employer whether you would be a fantastic option for a job or not. If possible, have someone from your campus career office, or maybe an alumnus in the specialty that you want to know more about, have a look at your resume to make sure you have included as much pertinent information as possible. Because if its not the situation, then there isnt any point in including it at all since it would just ruin the overall feeling of a very good narrative. Becaus e common sense isnt always common, I thought Id share with you a few of the larger problems. You should only incorporate the main things and the things that could be relevant for your present position. An objective helps the employer see you have direction, that youve thought about what you need to do and youve got a feeling of what youre getting into. If you own a lot of experience, then you may add more than 1 section. Paint a dynamic picture of the kind of work you did and the level of your responsibilities. Using Deans List Resume Another excess bit its possible to enhance your education section is any certificates you might have. Dont send in a string of disjointed emails over the span of a couple of days that each contain different details. If you believe its pretty cool you know the way to use standard applications, I am likely to worry you dont know a lot about computers. Set your education section at the peak of your resume. If youve resolved to return to school after a number of years in the workforce, you should place your work experience prior to your education. Be certain to list distinct skills that are specific to your area. For instance, if youre asking for a job as an administrative assistant, you dont will need to discuss the way your position for a babysitter helped improve your childcare skills, but you might share the way the experience helped you cultivate time management abilities and the capacity to juggle numerous tasks at the same time. Deans list can be exceedingly helpful in regards to that, especially if youre a fresh graduate without real working experience.

Gender diversity provides huge benefits in the workplace. pWhile some industries have made significant advancements in gender diversity, some industries lag further behind... and the construction industry is well-known for being in the latter category. If someone says, construction workers, youll likely picture a group of men in yellow hard hats analyzing an architects plans or laying bricks on top of a scaffold. And men at work signs only help to reinforce this image.pThis stereotype is rooted in reality. When was the last time you actually spotted a woman on a construction site? Or hired a female plumber or carpenter? Your answer is most likely never. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statisticsreports that only 3.4% of the total of 8.3 million construction employees are women.pBut the construction industry has a lot more to offer than steel-toed boots and hard hats, and it needs women to help advance the industry in this era of rapid change. Here are 5 reasons why women joining the workforce or looking to make a pivot should consider a career in construction.h21. Fuel Innovation/h2pNot only is diversity the socially and morally right thing to do, but it is also actually an excellent business strategy. pResearch presented in the Harvard Business Reviewshows that diverse teams develop more innovative ideas. This is further supported by a study conducted by Gallupon the performance of gender-diverse teams versus single-gender teams, which found that the difference in backgrounds and perspectives led to better business performance and problem-solving. h22. Capitalize on Demand/h2pThe construction industry is currently experiencing a labor shortage. The industry itself is booming and projected to be one of the fastest-growing industries, with total spending projected to exceed $1.45 trillion in 2023/a. However, most construction companies are unable to meet the rising demand. pAccording to the Associated General Contractors of America/a, more than 80% of contractors are experiencing difficulties filling hourly craft positions that represent the bulk of the construction workforce.pAnd demand isnt limited to individual contributor roles. Given the industry boom, there are a number of open stable and high-paying roles (a ny project managers out there?) waiting for the right candidateh23. Leadership Opportunities/h2pAccording to the Bureau of Labor Statistics/a, women compose only 7.7% of the total 1 million managerial positions in construction.br/pBut given the highly collaborative nature of construction work, more women in leadership roles would help drive innovation and enhance productivity.Furthermore, as a woman in construction in a leadership position, youd have the unique opportunity to drive change for the industry and make it a more attractive option for other women.h24. High-Income Potential/h2pSalaries for many skilled positions in construction are on the rise, making a construction career a prime choice for women looking for a high-paying job,pThe 2018 Construction Craft Salary Surveyconducted by the National Center for Construction Education and Research revealed that salaries for many skilled craft areas are increasing. Project managers and project supervisors topped the list at $92,523 and $88,355, respectively. The next set of highest-paying jobs include those of combo welders ($71,067), instrumentation technicians ($70,080), pipe welders ($69,222), power line workers ($68,262) and industrial electricians ($67,269). Of the 32 categories of workers in the survey, 19 positions earned an average salary of $60,000 or higher.h25. Sense of accomplishment/h2p The construction industry can give employees a unique sense of achievement. Yes, the job is stressful and the work can be demanding, but nothing beats the feeling of being able to build something from the ground up. pHow many professionals in other industries can point at a school, a hospital, or a skyscraper and say I helped build that?pThe construction industry has a long way to go in combating gender bias and supporting women in the workforce, but given the current demand for workers, theres no better time to pick up a sledgehammer (figurative or literal) and smash the gender stereotypes plaguing the construct ion industry.

This doctor says this sleep position means you are addicted to coffeeThis doctor says this sleep position means you are addicted to coffeeA recent report found that sleeping in certain positions can not only have positive and negative effects on your health but also on your productivity levels. Sleeping a certain way can also reveal if you have a caffeine or smoking addiction as well according to Dr. Michael J. Breus, PhDand DABSM (Diplomate of the American Board of Sleep Medicine) also known as The Sleep Doctor.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moraIn a recent article he wrote for Psychology Today, Breus explained that people who sleep on their sides, which is one of the most popular sleep positions, can be linked to positive qualities such as being calm, open-minded and good at compromising. These are all ideal qualities for employees.Your bad sideHowever, a lot can be revealed by w hich side you sleep on and what you do with your arms and legs when you are in this position. For example, people who sleep on the left side tend to be creative and well-educated but if you sleep on the right side, there is a strong chance you have a greater chance of being a smoker and having a dependency on caffeine. And thats just the direction you are facing. If you sleep with your arms at your side, you are usually a more rigid thinker and can be very trusting and gullible. If you sleep with your arms out you tend to be very hard on yourself and others and a little suspicious. That is a lot of information for one sleeping position. 5 Reasons Why Social Proof Matters to Recruiters

5 Reasons Why Social Proof Matters to Recruiters 5 Reasons Why Social Proof Matters to Recruiters As the unemployment rate shrinks, the competition for jobs is growing. At the same time, employers have  changed the way the vet candidates. CareerBuilders annual social media recruitment survey  found that 60 percent of employers check candidates social media accounts â€" a 500 percent increase over the last decade. Employers want more than resume clichés from candidates, which is why your social media activity â€" and the things people say about you on social media â€" speak so loudly to employers. We call this social proof: proof of the value you create as an employee shared by others on social media. Many people fail to invest in collecting social proof, but thats a big mistake. Here are five ways in which a lack of social proof can harm your career: 1. A Lack of Social Proof Suggests You Havent Done Anything Impressive Does the cliché Theres nothing here to write home about apply to you? When employers are checking your social media profiles, having nothing to show is equally as bad as a profile full of inappropriate party pictures.Who are you? Are you more than competent at your current position? How do you contribute? These are the questions employers want your social media presence to answer. Social proof sells your knowledge, skills, and abilities. If you want to be discovered, you need to point employers toward your rich profiles and portfolios online. 2. A Lack of Social Proof Exposes an Incomplete Career Story Most people have incomplete social profiles and resumes full of generalities.  Unless referred by someone for a job, they will unlikely receive any calls back from employers. If you dont have  substance to display, your chances of being ignored are high. A complete story that  includes social proof can show the accomplishments and impact of your career. Someone interested in your career exploits will want to stay informed about what youre up to â€" and thats a good thing! That means you are memorable and have created a meaningful  story for your career. 3. A Lack of Social Proof Reveals a Lack of Hustle What you dont say speaks volumes. When theres no social proof, people will start to create narratives for you â€"  narratives that arent necessarily true. You dont want a lack of proof to speak for you when you can  leverage proof for your success. Social proof shows youre taking extra steps to ensure your marketability. It shows that your options are open and you desire to put your best foot forward. It also says you want to strengthen your career narrative. It confirms the authenticity of your goals and aspirations. Its a powerful way to keep employers and recruiters coming back for more. 4. A Lack of Social Proof Says Everything Anyone Needs to Know About You If your voice  is the only voice talking about  what youve done, people will just write it  off as bragging. When others are sharing testimony about you, it substantiates your abilities. People envision you doing the same things for them. When we hear people telling stories about how others have helped them, we are assured and comforted more than we are by lists of certifications and degrees. Recruiters and employers will start to trust you even before meeting you, and soon, youll be a serious contender in their eyes. If youre the only witness to the great things you do, then you only serve yourself. 5. A Lack of Social Proof Drains Authenticity From Your Brand Without social proof, you lack authenticity. Employers are  unlikely to contact you if you lack realness. Quotes, stories, and endorsements from others strengthen your authority and prove your brand is accurate. Social proof provokes engagement of some type. Sometimes that  just means a click of the like button, but over time, this engagement will add layers of interest. Enough of it will compel others to start taking notice and  spreading the word. Remember, though, that you want to draw attention without being outrageous. People draw closer to you when you have a strong voice. Common ways to establish a voice  include writing  blog posts or producing videos related to what you do and how you do it. If you show your personality through these things, you will be more memorable. When your accomplishments are clear, others will want to know more about them. In the end, youll become  indispensable. How to Stick to Your New Years Career Resolutions

How to Stick to Your New Year's Career Resolutions How to Stick to Your New Year's Career Resolutions The best part of the New Year? We all get a chance to have a do-over. Whatever goals and dreams you have been thinking about over the past year, now’s your chance to make those achievements possible over the next twelve months. Looking for a new job? Working toward a promotion ? Planning to ask for a raise ? No matter the career aspiration, we all need a little help and guidance to keep us on track - which is why we spoke with Laura Weldy, life coach at The Well Supported Woman. Based in Nashville, TN, Weldy helps millennial women seeking more confidence, clarity and connection in their daily lives. Here’s what she advises for all jobs seekers and workers who want to stick to their New Year’s resolutions in 2019. Most of us who set New Year’s resolutions tend to have a few goals that are vague or a little too over the top. If you want to actually see your resolutions through, make sure you think about how realistic your goals are and how you will track the progress you make. “For those of us with a full-time job, I love the idea of crafting some resolutions around the progress you desire to make in your career and the lifestyle you want to experience in your downtime,” says Weldy. For those work resolutions, Weldy says it’s important to consider very measurable ones - so focus your resolutions on specific awards, titles, projects or milestones you want to complete or work on this year. One of the hardest parts about setting New Year’s resolutions is how we treat ourselves when we don’t stick to them. Don’t worry - you’re not alone in this. So many people feel the same way about their resolutions. If you want to get ahead in your career , you can’t set resolutions that are going to make you feel bad about yourself. It’s hard to avoid this, but it comes down to spending more time thinking about the resolutions you are setting and why you are setting them. “This is one of the downsides of the New Year’s resolution phenomenon - if you didn’t achieve your resolutions last year (or the year before that!) it’s easy to get discouraged,” says Weldy. “Your resolutions or goals should never be a source of shame for you - instead, think of them as always changing reflections of what matters to you right now.” Working a full-time job or tackling the job hunt is hard work enoughâ€"so your resolutions should focus on positive ways to help make the process easier, or to help you achieve your goals. If you set a long list of resolutions where the majority are goals that are going to take a lot of work and add more hours to your workday, you’re eventually going to burn out . As a result, find it hard to keep up with everything. Not to mention, you won’t be feeling too happy, both about your work ethic and yourself! Weldy encourages us to evaluate our resolutions by asking ourselves: “Is this truly important to me, or is this something I feel I SHOULD do?” Instead, she says to focus on the resolutions that you’re really excited about in order to have the most success with your goal setting. If there’s a really exciting project you can take ownership of in the New Year, focus on that goal right away. Sometimes when we set our New Year’s resolutions, we set too many big goals and later find ourselves completely failing at keeping most of them. We start the year excited and make a long list of all the ideas we have and all the things we want to accomplish. Some 50 resolutions later, and we can’t even remember half the ones we set for ourselves. “I see this all the time with resolutions because I think goal setting and living in that mental space of what could be possible for you is so much fun,” notes Weldy. “But even more fun than creating a list of 2,000 goals and imagining your dream life is actually LIVING that life. That happens when we prioritize and focus.” Weldy recommends keeping your resolution list short with about 3-5 resolutions in total. It’s hard to stick to your goals on your own - but it doesn’t have to be that way. Consider showing your resolutions to your boss and asking them to help keep you accountable for the career goals you’re setting in the New Year. If you don’t necessarily want your manager to know your resolutions, you can always confide in a co-worker, or even consider working with a personal coach. “Find someone to help hold you accountable, and keep your resolutions somewhere where you see them every day,” advises Weldy. “If you are still struggling with sticking to your resolutions, you may need someone to help you better understand your mode of operating in the world, your motivations and how to maximize your time and energy. Nothing in this world is truly one-size-fits-all - including productivity hacks and tools for goal accomplishment. This is when working with a professional life coach comes in handy.” Don’t worry - you’ve got this! And if you don’t quite reach your goals this year, you’ll always have a do-over at the end of 2019.

7 Ways to (Always) Leave Work on Time

7 Ways to (Always) Leave Work on Time 7 Ways to (Always) Leave Work on Time We’re a funny breed. We’re well aware that working long hours has been directly correlated to stress, anxiety, and heart disease- but in spite of that, we continue to give our jobs more and more of our time.Last year, the average American worked over 45 hours in a given week. One in three professionals work more than 50 hours per week. As if that’s not enough, research shows that 80% of workers spend time “after hours” answering emails and returning phone calls. And all this, for what? It turns out, working longer hours actually doesn’t contribute to higher productivity. In fact, consistently working more than 40 hours a week can make you less productive. Translation: Work more; accomplish less.Knowing this, why is it so hard to leave work on time? Maybe you get distracted easily, fail to prioritize, or let last minute requests push you into overtime. Maybe, instead of aiming to get everything done within the eight-hour workday, you’ve bought into the idea that you’re supposed to be always on.Whatever your reason, it’s time to reevaluate. So, stop logging those extra hours and use these seven tips to get out the door on time.1. Begin the Day With the End in Mind This sounds basic, but I’m convinced that many people don’t leave work on time simply because they don’t set the expectation that they will. Instead, they simply go with the flow of the workday, working on whatever comes their way and neglecting to block time on their calendar for priority work. Then, at the end of the day, there’s still a pile of work to do- all because they didn’t plan for 5 PM.So, when you arrive in the morning, identify the time you want to leave that night. Put it on your calendar, set an alarm on your mobile phone, or simply make a psychological commitment to that departure time.It can also help to join a class or social group that meets at a set time after work, which will give you an extra incentive to manage your day to get out of work on time.2. Tel l People When You Have to Leave If you start telling people you need to leave at a certain time, you’ll be much more likely to do so. Make the commitment to yourself, and then share it with others: As you discuss plans and assignments throughout the day, tell your colleagues, “I’ve got to be out of here on time tonight, so if you need something, let me know by 3 PM.”By encouraging your co-workers to give you as much notice as possible for any requests and setting the expectation that you won’t be available in the early evening, you’ll avoid unnecessary last minute assignments or meetings.Try this method one day, then another, and then the next. Eventually, you’ll retrain your colleagues to expect you to leave on time every day. Plus, saying it out loud and owning your goal to leave on time will help you feel more empowered in your ability to do so.3. Allow 20 Minutes to TransitionOnce you’ve set your departure time, give yourself some practical help achieving it: Blo ck out the 20 minutes prior to that time on your calendar to clean up any last daily details (e.g., filing papers, organizing your workspace, and making sure all essential email is cleared out) and get ready for tomorrow.Treat these last few minutes like an important meeting with your boss or a client- i.e., don’t let anything interfere with it, and don’t let anybody schedule in one last meeting with you. This is a priority time slot that’s non-negotiable.4. Do the Most Important Work Next, make sure your critical work is getting done- and getting done early. Do you work on a C-priority project because it’s more fun or less difficult than an A-priority project? I know- working on email may feel like you’re getting things done,  but it doesn’t help you finish the monthly report that’s due or the agenda for the big meeting next week.To make sure you’re on track, here's a quick check: Create a list with two columns. On the left side, list the three to five most critical priorities you’re responsible for. On the right side, list all the activities you do during the day. At the end of the day, match it up. How much of what you accomplished on the right side was in direct support of your key priorities on the left?If you don’t have a stellar match-up, you should re-evaluate the work you’re choosing to do throughout the day. Getting your most important priorities done will not only make it easier to leave on time, but will also help you feel more satisfied about the work you accomplished.5. Stop Wasting Time During the Day If you constantly find yourself at the office late at night, also take a few minutes to evaluate your work practices during the day. Do you check your email every five minutes? Respond to every text immediately? Leave your instant messaging on all day? While it may seem necessary to constantly stay in touch with your colleagues, constant distraction can seriously undermine your productivity and focus, and all of these habits ca n work against you to keep you at work longer.Instead, challenge yourself to check email only at a few designated times during the day and block time on your calendar when you’ll turn off all your incoming distractions and hunker down to work on your key priorities.6. Pick Up the Phone Speaking of productivity: Email is a great tool for many things, but it can also easily become a time-consuming crutch- because often, a phone conversation takes less time and can be more effective. So if your inbox is cluttered with ongoing strings of messages that never seem to reach a resolution, and it’s holding up your work, then it’s time to change your strategy: Pick up the phone. With a simple call, you’ll save hours of email reading, sorting, and responding.7. Use Technology to Help You FocusYes, some technology can certainly be a productivity killer, but there are also hundreds of apps and online tools that can help keep you focused. For example, 30/30 helps you stay on task for a spe cific time frame, and Freedom disconnects you from the internet to allow you to work without distractions. (When I first tried Freedom and turned my internet off for 45 minutes, something clicked. Because I knew getting online wasn’t an option, I focused differently- and it completely shifted the way I approached my work.)At the very least, turn off the dinging alerts and visual icons for your email, texts, and social media messages. Getting out of work on time is about managing that workflow on your timeline, not the other way around. It’s pretty simple: Life is short; time is precious. Doing great work and giving your job 100% doesn’t have to mean spending hours of overtime at the office. The solution? Prioritize your responsibilities, minimize distractions, set the right expectations- and then, leave work on time.Photo of man leaving work courtesy of Shutterstock.

5 ways your cover letter can grab a recruiters attention

5 ways your cover letter can grab a recruiter's attention 5 ways your cover letter can grab a recruiter's attention You’ve put the finishing touches on your resume, found a host of appealing job listings and are sitting down at your computer to apply. Then, you see it and your heart sinks.*Cues horror film music*They each require a cover letter. With so many positions in mind - all requiring unique cover letters - you may be tempted to just give up rather than wrestle with the dreaded “To Whom it May Concern.”Before you run screaming, here’s a guide  to help you navigate the cover letter writing process.Wait, does anyone still use cover letters anymore? The cover letter has fallen out of favor among some recruiters and job applicants.Forty-seven percent of those seeking positions said they didn’t include “a cover letter with their current or most recent job application,” while just  26% of recruiters said they think cover letters are crucial “in their decision to hire an applicant,” according to  the 2017 Job Seeker Nation Study by Jobvite (with data collected by Zogby Analytics) .Still, there are plenty of jobs that require a cover letter, and you don’t want to put yourself at a disadvantage by skipping it entirely. Here’s what you need to know:Tailor it to the job you’re applying forIt can be tempting to use a one-size-fits all cover letter when applying to multiple jobs, but you should ditch the cookie-cutter approach.Instead of describing the same achievements on each cover letter, show every recruiter that you really do understand how your experience could benefit their company if you’re brought on board. In your cover letter, be sure to highlight the points that speak to the desired job experience they’re seeking, and explain how what you’ve done directly relates to the job description.Ditch the weak introductionYou don’t know how long the recruiter will be willing to read over your cover letter, so make the top of it count. So, if you had to choose between “Please consider me for your sales representative opening” and “Your need for a top-performing sales representative is an excellent match to my three-year history as a top-ranked, multimillion-dollar producer,” there’s no contest, according to  Monster.com.So how do you write a strong cover letter introduction?Be concrete, succinct and interesting. Give examples of your successes or name your contacts at the company, according to  The Balance.com.In other words, lead with your best foot forward.Don’t rambleTime is of the essence when it comes to job applications, and you don’t want the recruiter’s eyes to glaze over in an attempt to read through your letter. When it comes to the perfect length, the perfect letter is between a half a page and a page long, according to  Alison Green, author of  the blog Ask a Manager. She writes that recruiters’ preferences vary, but that “…the perfect length for a cover letter is the amount of space that it takes to explain why you’re an unusually strong candidate for the job aside from what’s on your resume, ” Green writes.Go beyond what’s on your resumeRecruiters can read your bullet points, but they don’t necessarily know how what you accomplished impacted your career - the cover letter is your opportunity to fill them in.The Muse explains how to dive deeper into how the achievements on your resume have shaped you professionally.“Instead of just repeating yourself (‘I was in charge of reviewing invoice disputes’), use your cover letter to describe additional details that you weren’t able to squeeze onto the single page of your resume: ‘By resolving invoice disputes, I gained a deep analytical knowledge - but more importantly, I learned how to interact calmly and diplomatically with angry customers.’ A cover letter gives you the freedom to use full sentences - instead of bullet points - so use them to expand upon your resume points and tell the story of why you’re the perfect fit for the company,” the publication says.Submit it as a PDF fileYou’ve worked har d to format that tab indent or bullet point layout just so - so why risk that hard work disappearing the minute your file gets converted from a .doc to a .docx on the hiring manager’s computer screen?“Not every office computer can read .docx or .pages files, but virtually everybody can open a PDF file without any conversion,”  Forbes reports.  Ã¢€œFile conversions are bad for two huge reasons. First, they are just as likely to not bother and move onto the next applicant. And, second, conversions can introduce formatting errors. Both are bad.”

8 Things You Should Never Say In A Meeting

8 Things You Should Never Say In A Meeting 8 Things You Should Never Say In A Meeting When the patience is low and the stress is high, when you want to smile but you also just want to cry, you may let unprofessional words and phrases slip out. We’ve all been there. Work can be challenging. And juggling coworkers and bosses can sometimes seem like climbing up a downward-moving escalator. It’s in these moments, that you must keep your cool. Whether you need a woo-sah moment or need to head to the onsite gym to sweat it out, try your hardest to maintain a calm, collected disposition at work. I recently read “Tame Your Terrible Office Tyrant: How to Manage Childish Boss Behavior and Thrive in Your Job” by Lynn Taylor and it opened my eyes to the words and behaviors that are downright dangerous to a career. It inspired me to come up with the 8 things to never say in a meeting. Banish these phrases before it costs you your brand. Sure, a certain someone is tossing this word around left and right, but don’t  drop this during your next staff meeting. “Having good language skills is crucial not only to effective communication and trust â€" but your career, too,” writes Taylor.  Ã¢€œSo it’s worthwhile to find original words â€" and ways â€" to be authentic and professional with your team and managers.” “As a CEO or senior manager, you wield tremendous influence to seize the opportunities presented here - to create an exuberant workforce and increase profitability,” writes Taylor. Don’t undermine your success or your influence by poor diction. For the record, yes ‘conversate’ is a word , but most people use it incorrectly. When in doubt, stick with ‘converse’ or ‘speak with.’ You’ll avoid any odd looks of confusion. You’re no longer in college and this isn’t fraternity row. Instead of addressing your male colleagues as ‘bro’ consider simply using  first names. You’ll still be likable and cool, we promise. Business is based on mutually beneficial relationships and trust . However, using the phrase ‘trust me’ either in negotiations or when taking on a difficult project can make you sound the opposite of trusted. In fact, those who use this phrase are often not to be trusted to deliver on their promise.  Ã¢€œTrust is the cornerstone of any sustainable business relationship , so it’s worthwhile to find original words â€" and ways â€" to be authentic and professional with your team and managers,” insists Taylor. Beware of snap judgments or potentially offensive remarks like this one. Whether directed at a person or an idea brainstormed in a meeting, ‘that’s crazy’ reeks of discrimination and makes you look extra ‘judgy’. According to Taylor, using phrases like ‘that’s crazy,’ ‘how stupid,’ and ‘that’s dumb,’ can show your true weaknesses . “Emotional intelligence in the workplace seems like a buzz term…but your ability to regulate your own emotions for better interpersonal relations can be the difference of having a great career versus a good one,” she says. “Not having emotional intelligence is sure to slow your professional growth . The workplace is a fabric of people who can only move their projects forward with the support of others. In a macro sense, a team with strong emotional intelligence  can mean millions of dollars added to the bottom line.” Words like ‘synergy’ and ‘wheelhouse’ are completely overused lingo . While they are fine to use occasionally, steer clear of overused words. Dropping these in meetings can make you look as though you are trying too hard and not truly genuine. Stick to your lexicon and ditch the buzzwords. While many insist that this is not a real word, it is referenced as a nonstandard word in major dictionaries. Nevertheless, the double negative (“ir-” and “-less”) just sounds bad. Stay away from words that are made-up vernacular that may have slipped into common conversation but don’t really belong. Instead, just say ‘regardless,’ ‘in spite of,’ ‘nevertheless,’ or even ‘notwithstanding.’ Rule of thumb: if you’re not sure about the validity of a word, don’t use it. Last but not least, this is a phrase you should never, ever utter at work unless you’d like to be unemployed. Sure, it can be dreadful to be assigned a task that isn’t   technically in your ‘wheelhouse,’ however, answering your manager or the team with the response ‘that’s not my job’ is not a  smart move. This phrase and its cousins  - ‘I’m too busy’ and ‘Can’t someone else do it’  - are surefire ways for your performance review to go a little something like this: “While you’ve excelled at your individual work, I’m really worried that you’re not a team player and that you are unwilling to collaborate on projects for the good of the team and the company. Given this, I’m not sure whether XYZ company is the place for you.” Avoid that conversation entirely by simply making note of the assignment, then having a chat with your manager one-on-one to discuss your workload and the upcoming project. “If you like your job and want to advance, but feel like you’re sometimes your own worst enemy, take a step back,” advises Taylor. “There’s only one thing that can sabotage anyone from achieving greatness â€" and conversely catapult anyone to the top. Ourselves.”

4 Women Who Are Redefining the Concept of Working Mother

4 Women Who Are Redefining the Concept of Working Mother 4 Women Who Are Redefining the Concept of Working Mother In her speech introducing her husband at the 2012 Democratic National Convention, Michelle Obama told the audience that, during her first term as First Lady, her most important title was “mom-in-chief.” This statement was met with extended applause. I love Michelle Obama. I love the causes she stands for, from fighting against childhood obesity to supporting women’s rights abroad to addressing poverty. When I go for runs around DC, I often jog past the White House and imagine Michelle Obama doing 50 push-ups and then rewarding herself with a homemade bowl of lobster mac and cheese, and this image inspires me for another two miles. I simply adore her. There’s no question that Michelle Obama’s work is a significant force in the fight for equality. I know that Mrs. Obama loves and cares about her family, but her nod to “mom-in-chief” is a familiar move, one I’ve found myself making. Many successful professional women feel constantly inclined to say, “but of course my kids come first” or “first and foremost, I’m a mother.” When you look at the Twitter profiles of some of the world’s most successful women, their bio often follows this formula “I’m a mother, a wife, and also a [insert incredible, globally significant accomplishment and title here].” Listen, being a mother is an important (and difficult) job. At this very moment, I am listening to Elmo sing a song about tricycles for the fourth time in three days. This morning my son walked into the kitchen with a box of tampons and demanded to know their purpose. And there are times, particularly when I’m reading Goodnight, Goodnight Construction Site for the fourth consecutive time, when the gravity of my maternal responsibilities- the fact that I am responsible for turning this person into a productive member of society who will raise a family of his own- consumes me. Being a parent makes you learn about yourself and your morals and your definition of success and happiness. But my role as a mother is not always my most important role. And certainly saying that other roles and responsibilities are important does not diminish the importance of parenting. Unfortunately, many working parents- both mothers and fathers- feel inclined to constantly qualify their accomplishments, saying that, of course, nothing is as satisfying or rewarding as being a parent. Sure, my Saturday mornings with my son are much more enjoyable and rewarding than a four-hour conference call. But a brand workshop with a client I love that leads to a creative breakthrough? Hands-down more satisfying than pushing my son on the swing. And that doesn’t make me a bad mom. When we refuse to speak honestly about how much we value our work, or when we downplay our love for our work for fear of being judged, we reinforce the incorrect assumption that career-driven women would stop working if they could afford it. And for many women (like me), that’s just not true. Furthermore, requiring constant assurance from a working woman that she loves her children (she shouldn’t have to demonstrate that to anyone except her family) also reinforces the assumption that women can’t be both loving mothers and capable leaders, employees, and colleagues. The good news is that a number of women in the media are abandoning outdated cultural conceptions of what it means to be a working mother. By doing so, they’re defying the expectation that working mothers must always be assuring the people around them that they do, in fact, care about their children. For example: 1. Leslie Knope Leslie Knope (played by Amy Poehler) from Parks and Recreation has been one of my favorite characters on television for years. When she and her fictitious husband got pregnant at the end of last season, I was worried that, like so many sitcoms of the past, the show would completely change directions and focus exclusively on her life as a mother. But, to my pleasant surprise, it didn’t. In fact, the final season of Parks and Recreation continued to center on the heart of the show- Knope’s dedication to public service, her relationships with her friends and co-workers, and her deep love for her city. Her children are part of the story, but they’re not the main event. And by showing that a woman can continue to be a productive, high-achieving professional while having children (a totally common occurrence), Parks and Recreation refuses to cater to misogynist stereotypes. 2. Beyoncé Beyoncé began recording songs for her self-titled album just a few months after she had her daughter and released the album around her first birthday. I was already a Beyoncé fan, but what I love about this album is that songs that we’d expect from Beyoncé- sexy, catchy, edgy- co-exist on the album with songs about being a mother. There’s no contradiction between having “Partition” (a song that uses the verb “Monica Lewinskied”) alongside “Blue,” which features Beyoncé’s daughter’s little voice. It’s a perfectly packaged demonstration that women can pursue their personal passions, celebrate their sexuality and successes, and be mothers all at the same time. 3 and 4. Maria and Gina of Sesame Street Maria (played by Sonia Manzano) has been on Sesame Street since 1971. She co-owns the fix-it shop with her husband Luis and spends quite a bit of time on the show being a handywoman. In fact, in the episode I watched this morning, she exclaimed to two needy child-monster-puppets, “I’m sorry, but I only have time for work today.” She has a daughter, Gabi, who also helps out in the shop. Over the years, her character has evolved from a teenager to a librarian to a business owner and a mother, and she’s never had to sacrifice her personality or her caring relationships with the monsters of Sesame Street. Except for that bit about being a maternal figure to magical puppets, it’s a pretty realistic- and normal- storyline. Gina (played by Alison Bartlett O’Reilly) is another working mom on the show. She’s a veterinarian and single mom who adopted a son from Guatemala a few seasons ago. Again, like Maria, much of her time on the show is spent in her veterinary practice, giving advice to the animals of Sesame Street. Sesame Street is a show exclusively designed for children- the demographic group that is most “at risk” or influenced by the policies and expectations that seek to govern the behavior of parents.
